Some treated patients at the Douala Gynaecological Hospital have been sent home despite being unable to pay their bills.
The move was announced by the Minister of Public Health, Dr Manaouda Malachie after a visit to the facility.
“I have just carried out an unannounced visit to some hospital facilities in Douala particularly to the Gynaecological Hospital where I had to release some patients that were being held back for failure to pay their bills” he tweeted.
The decision, he said, was “in keeping with instructions from the Head of State”.
The minister’s intervention came as one of several unannounced visits he’s made to health facilities as part of a running campaign to restore order in the health sector.
His discharging if the treated patients also comes at a time the country is witnessing a spike in COVID-19 cases nationwide.
