Just like many Cameroonians, the diplomatic community is not taking the arrest and detention of techpreneur, Rebecca Enonchong lightly.
The French Ambassador to Cameroon, Christophe Guilhou has added his voice to the thousands who have in unison demanded for the liberation of the Tech Entrepreneur and Human Rights activist, Rebecca Enonchong.
The diplomat this Thursday tweeted the picture of the activist alongside the trending #FreeRebecca currently being used to apply pressure for her release.
The Canadian Embassy to Cameroon as well as other diplomats have followed suite, demanding she be released.
“Canada expresses its strong concern about the signal sent to foreign investors and technology partners by Rebecca Enonchong’s arbitrary detention. Cameroon’s technology and startup sectors have huge potential to create jobs and wealth in the country. Ms. Enonchong is a leader in these sectors of whom all Cameroonians can be proud” the Canadian embassy to Cameroon wrote on social media.
“As Board Chair of Afrilabs, a Pan-African network of innovation centers across Africa, Chair of ActivSpaces in Cameroon with its three tech hubs in Cameroon, and co-founder of the Cameroon Angels Network,” the statement read further, “she is nurturing Cameroonian tech talent and attracting critical foreign into the technology sector”.
Several other politicians and diplomats have also called for the release of Rebecca, following her arrest by the Gendarmes in Douala.
The techpreneur has spent a second night behind bars after she was detained earlier this week. Activists maintain her arrest was unlawful, given the lack of a warrant.
