The Cameroonian and Nigerian Governments have together decided to take up fresh commitments to eliminate secessionists movements in their respective Nations together with the Boko Haram terrorist group that has killed thousands and displaced more in the Northern zones of both countries.

This commitment was made during the 8th session of the Cameroon-Nigeria Transborder Security Committee in Nigeria’s capital Abuja, yesterday August 24, 2021.

Leading an 11-man Delegation from Cameroon was the Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, together with Minister Felix Mbayu, Galax Yves Landry Etouga and Maxim Eko Eko amongst others.

At the meeting with the Nigerian Government representatives led by the Nigerian Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Jideofor Kwusike, Minister Paul Atanga Nji recommitted Cameroon’s desire to combat all forms of crime threatening the border communities of both countries. With this, he urged experts to propose workable solutions to ensure this so it could be submitted for considerations to Presidents Muhammadu Buhari and Paul Biya.

He also revealed that “The kidnappings for ransoms, training of armed groups along common borders, illegal trafficking of arms and ammunition and money laundering still remains a major preoccupation.”

The Nigerian representatives on their part agreed that concerted efforts are needed to quell down the insecurities threatening the peaceful coexistence of both countries at the borders. “H.E Muhammadu Buhari reassures you that Nigeria will neither be used as a haven or a staging area by any group of secessionists to destabilize another friendly sovereign country.” Declared General Babagana, one of the Nigerian representatives.

They also reassured that any moves to form alliances between secessionists of both Nations for greater havoc will be systematically dealt with appropriately.

After the General meeting, the three Northern Regional Governors alongside those of the North West and South West Regions met with their Nigerian counterparts of the North-Eastern and Southern states in a conclave to brainstorm on steps to implement better security along the common borders of both nations.

Their discussions were particularly centered around the Boko Haram insurgencies, as well as the Anglophone secessionist movements in Cameroon and the Indigenous People of Biafra, in Nigeria.
