Health officials in the Bafut Council area have revealed that four persons have died of Covid-19 in the locality and more than 30 others are infected with the virus in less than a week.

The Bafut District Hospital describes the figures as disturbing and points to potential large scale community transmission of the pandemic.

It is against this backdrop that the mayor of the Bafut municipality, Ngwakongoh Lawrence embarked on distributing protective masks to passengers entering the municipality.

At the Mankon Food Market and Ntarinkon Main Market hosting parks of vehicles plying the Bamenda-Bafut road, the mayor and some councillors distributed facemasks and disinfected the vehicles.

“People leave from here into Bafut so we decide to tackle the taxis that are plying the road by giving them packets of nose masks so that any passenger that enters into a taxi without a mask, the driver should be able to give them”, Mayor Ngwakongoh Lawrence said.

Bafut is located appropriately 23km from Bamenda and was amongst the towns in the North West region where the first Covid-19 case were identified.

Meanwhile, those who took the first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine are still patiently waiting to have the second dose after the Regional delegate of Public Health for the North West disclosed that the vaccine was out of stock in the region.
