The new Divisional officer for Bafut subdivision, Forku Djokem Andelys has been installed with the task to restore peace in Bafut where economic activities have drastically declined due to the prevailing unrest in the area.

Mezam Senior Divisional Officer, Simon Emile Mooh during the installation ceremony in Bafut also mentioned that the over 180.000 locals of the area must continue collectively striving for peace to revive the area ravaged by insecurity.

Bafut, for the past two years, has witnessed at least three military operations with the recent one leading to the killing of some separatist fighters.

The crisis-hit Bafut subdivision, Mezam of the North West region had its new Divisional Officer installed on Thursday.

At the installation yesterday in Bafut, Mayor Lawrence Ngwakongoh said the economy and sand exploitation of Bafut has been dealt a huge blow due to insecurity.

“The population of Bafut is over 180.000 and lower Bafut has around 5.000 people and there’s no household in lower Bafut that is not involved in sand mining”, Ngwakongoh Lawrence said.

The mayor noted that before the crisis, the council realized over 38 million as income for the council that came in as a result of sand exploitation from lower Bafut.

The new D.O is expected to strive for normalcy in the area to revive the fallen economy.

With infrastructure destroyed and mainstream education dampened by insecurity, Mezam SDO called on the new Bafut DO to change the gloomy picture.

Before he was appointed DO of Bafut, he served as 2nd assistant SDO for Manyu.
