A Cameroonian lady based in France has come under immense criticism after she suggested that Africans in the diaspora should no longer send money to their relatives back home.

Talking on French media RMC, Stella Kamnga said the money sent back to Africa promoted laziness and over-dependency.

“Africans in the diaspora have to stop sending money back home,” she suggested. “The money contributes a big part to the GDP of the countries and this encourages laziness,” Stella claimed.

According to Stella’s assertions, the money sent home prevents Africans at home from reaching their full potential. She said “…it happens at times that some people just sit and cross their legs, and do nothing with their lives, waiting for the diaspora to send money… They have the idea that we plug money from trees here.”

Many Africans on social media have not reacted very kindly to her assertions on RMC. A social media user whose name we got as Fatou suggested African countries gave more to Europeans than they could receive from them.
She tweeted “Miss @stellakamnga Senegal, Mauritania, Guinea, and Ivory-Cost are providing European countries with tons of Gold, Bauxite (aluminum), Clay every single day, and nobody talking about it.
So why are u tryna to paint the colonizer as the victim when they are the theft?!”

Sports editor and journalist at the Cameroon Radio Television (CRTV), Njie Enow Ebai criticized the assertions of Stella Kamnga and suggested that Africa would be better off without a diaspora that looks down on them.

“Africa doesn’t need a diaspora that looks down on her. If anything the continent is yearning for her sons and daughters willing to be a crucial part of forging a more prosperous future. Stella Kamnga is exactly part of the diaspora that the continent doesn’t need,” he tweeted.

Another Twitter user said, “I think if Cameroon was easy, Stella won’t be in France. She can’t say such things if she is a clear indication of people who go out for greener pastures. If she doesn’t want to help her family, she doesn’t need to make it a national debate. Before criticizing, look at yourself.”
