Residents of Mbengwi road in Momo division, North West Region of Cameroon have reported gunshots this morning in their neighborhood.

Similar reports have come in from Chideh and Alakuma close to Bamenda, capital town of the North West Region, where a Separatist conflict has prevailed for over five years.

Talking to MMI, a local said from the sound of the gunshots, they believe it is an exchange of gunfire between those fighting for a breakaway state called Ambazonia, and government forces.

“It started at about 5:40 AM with a very loud explosion that woke everyone up…everyone is scared and worried,” revealed a source.

The gunshots have since restricted residents of the affected neighborhoods from stepping out or going to church like they do every Sunday mornings.

To one of them, today’s exchange is the “… most thunderous gunshots with multiple explosions since this crisis started…” Majority of them are now indoors.

Today’s gun battles are among hundreds recorded since the start of the bloody armed conflict.

The conflict broke out in 2016 after government used force to suppress peaceful protests by Anglophone teachers and lawyers seeking the preservation of Anglo-saxon culture and education.

Till date, thousands are believed to have died and millions affected in one way or the other. Thousands have also been arrested.
