300m² land raffle draw winner cries foul as brewery company cuts him off without prize

After winning a raffle draw organised by Kadji Beer, a brewery enterprise, Leonard Ngong thought most of his problems would be over.

Announced winner of a 300m² piece of land on July 11, 2019, he believed he would be able to make more meaning out of it for a better life.

Over two years later, his dream is still far from coming true. The post-win situation appears to have put him in a more dire situation than he was in before.

“They were supposed to give me a 300m² piece of land with a land title. Till date, they have not done anything,” he told MMI.

He was a finalist among 13 others from across the country who competed in the draw.

Shortly after he was announced winner, Leonard was presented to the general public during one of the company’s public events, with a board indicating his winning prize.

Since then however, he explained, officials of the company have been avoiding him at all cost, denying his calls.

He added: “… I have been going there. Sometimes when I go there, they will not open the gate for me so I decided not to go there again.”

Seeking justice, however, Leonard noted, would be a lost battle: “They can take the best lawyers, I know they have the money,” he said.

Kadji, he added, should rather make it clear whether or not they are giving his prize, so he knows what course of action to take next.

“Sometimes,” he revealed, “I travel from Bamenda to Douala and I spend money just to follow up. For three years today, nothing has been done.”

Leonard’s situation is one of many others reported over the past months with different companies and institutions.

Gambling companies have often been accused of deleting accounts of customers who win huge sums of money, or making their cashout process more cumbersome to discourage them from having their gains.
