Thousands of Malians yesterday flooded the streets of the capital, Bamako in protest of sanctions placed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on them following an election postponement.
Supporters of the Transitional Military regime have hit out at the West African body’s sanctions that have cut off the country from regional trade and finance.
The sanctions were imposed following a 4-year postponement of the promised Presidential elections by the coup leaders which was supposed to bring the country back to civilian rule.
The military leadership consequently called for a demonstration against the sanctions imposed by Ecowas after a special summit in Accra, Ghana last Sunday.
Ecowas has nevertheless doubled down and threatened to increase the sanctions if elections are not conducted on the initially agreed date, February 2022.
