Lawyers and loved ones of Barrister Akum Michael, the treasurer of the Cameroon Bar have multiplied calls for his release.
According to a statement making rounds on social media and shared by many of his colleagues including Barrister Tamfu Richard, he was kidnapped this morning by unidentified gun men.
“… They entered his house in the most brutal manner, surrendered everyone to the floor, asking for money else they will kill one of his kids,” read a portion of the statement.
The armed bandits it added, “collected the phones of everyone in the house, removed frames and pictures from the wall, collected TV screens, gathered all wines and whiskies from the Bar, took him into his Hilux and a neighbour says they drove towards Tanka”.
The lawyer’s abduction which happened shortly after his 55th birthday follows that of Barrister Henry Kemende, a Senator.
The opposition politician was taken from his home in Bamenda, North West region by armed men only to be found later with bullet wounds. He passed away shortly after in hospital.
“Common Law Lawyers are at risk and have been declared enemy of the the Republic. This is what Bamenda has turned into now,” the message on social media added.
