Police officers have decried extortion and maltreatment by their seniors and bosses. Some say their overtime and AFCON bonuses have been slashed by their superiors for no reason. This, they say, is not the first time their pays are being slashed by those in positions of power wishing to enrich themselves.

The Principal of Government High School (GHS) Weh in Menchum, North West Region has spoken from captivity. The official being held with three other teachers is said to have reached out to his family yesterday but his abductors have made no demands yet. He and four teachers were abducted by armed men believed to be separatist fighters. One of them, a lady was later released for the sake of her little baby.

Residents of Sandpit, a neighbourhood in Buea remain in the dark after an electric pole in their vicinity went up in flames today. Unfortunately for them, on the same pole that went up in flames was mounted a transformer. The extent of the damage remains unknown as locals await repairs or replacement.

The Cameroon government’s decision to limit school and work hours due to the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations continues to face backlash especially in the troubled Anglophone regions. Many have expressed the opinion that the decision fails to consider especially students in the regions who have already lost a lot due to separatists-imposed lockdowns and ghost towns.

Students of the University of Buea will soon be receiving their 50,000 FCFA Presidential Grants for the 2019/2020 academic year. The list of meritorious students was put up today by the institution’s Vice Chancellor. The document also contained a schedule for collection which begins on January 25.

Stadium attendance soared today in Douala and Limbe where final group stage games for the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON were held. This was after government arm twisted workers and staff of many institutions to be present. In the case of the Buea Council in tandem with orders from the South West governor, workers were compelled to attend the games in Limbe or face sanctions.

Defending AFCON champions, Algeria have been booted out of the contest. They ended their AFCON 2021 campaign today, booted out by Côte D’Ivoire, 3-1. Algeria failed to win a single match out of three, and scored just one goal.

AFCON hosts, Cameroon will take on Comoros in their round of 16 game. Cameroon ended the first group stage campaign at the top of Group A with 7 points. Comoros on its part sailed through by stroke of luck, after emerging third from Group C with three points.
