Residents of Ndop in the North West Region say soldiers are stepping up extrajudicial killings. On Sunday, a trader named Felix was shot on his way from the market. A day before, a bartender was, allegedly, also killed by the military.
The parliament of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa today started its session in Yaounde. The session was chaired by Cameroon’s Honourable Hilarion Etong, the president of the CEMAC parliament. The parliament meets at a time when multiple challenges face the CEMAC region including the COVID-19 pandemic.
Youth week activities are ongoing in many parts of the country, involving mostly students and pupils. The activities will culminate in a series of march passes on Friday, February 11. This year’s National Youth Day theme is ‘Youth and Voluntary Participation in the Major Challenges of Cameroon’.
The Ambazonia Governing Council (AGovC), a separatist faction in the Anglophone regions, threatens to interrupt Youth Day activities. The group has called for a lockdown in the regions as the day approaches. Cameroon’s Youth Day is commemorated every February 11th, the same day as the UN referendum of 1961 when British Southern Cameroons voted to join La Republique du Cameroun.
Owing to armed conflicts, several communities in the North West and South West regions are not witnessing youth week activities. Many students and teachers are threatened and classes are occasionally interrupted. In some areas like in the North West Regional headquarters, Bamenda, activities are ongoing but under heavy military presence.
The South West Regional Assembly has offered benches to some schools in Meme Division, South West Region. The ceremony was done on the campus of Government Technical College, Kumba.
Indigenes of Boyo Division in the North West Region have requested assistance as they struggle to finance their newly opened Community School, Djichami. The school was opened by the villagers as an initiative to foster education in the village.
Cameroon’s Minister of Public Health has lauded health workers for their excellent work in containing Covid-19 during the AFCON. He extended his gratitude via a tweet today, a day after the end of the Africa Cup of Nations.
Mobile telephone network company, MTN is once again the official sponsor of the Elite One and Two football championships. This was announced earlier today after the company reached a deal with the country’s football governing body, FECAFOOT. It is hoped that the latest move will revive the championships which have been limping for a while.
Aboubakar Vincent, the highest goal scorer in the recently ended AFCON 2021 is the lone Cameroonian to feature on AFCON’s 2021 best XI. Fai Collins, Andre Onana, Zambo Anguissa, and Toko Ekambi also made the CAF best team list as substitutions. Egypt and Senegal both have three players each on the first XI list.
