New measures have been implemented by the Superintendent of the Kondengui Maximum Prison in Yaoundé against inmates who will be caught with Mobile Phones in prison.
A note issued out by the Superintendent reveals that defaulters will among other things be “chained in a disciplinary cell, transferred to other quarters, get suspended from all forms of visitation and communication for at least 1-3 months…”
These measures have been instituted as a form of limiting the diffusion of images of the prison to the outside world.
Originally designed for 1000 persons, the Yaoundé Kondengui Maximum Prison houses at least 4000 prisoners, who most are kept in the most deplorable of conditions.
Images diffused over social media have helped shed light on the horrible conditions of the jail, something which the prison management has not been very happy with, hence the complete ban on mobile phones.
