The company in charge of importing frozen fish into Cameroon, CONGELCAM has been accused of retailing rotten fish to citizens nationwide.
This follows the seizure of 5,000 kilograms of fish in Obala, Lekie division of the Centre region which authorities said was rotten. The seizure was done March 23.
Marthe Mebounou, Divisional Delegate of Trade in the Lekie division led the operation which resulted in the seizure of the consignment of rotten fish. The population of Obala is said to have before the March 23 seizure reportedly been complaining over the quality of fish sold to them.
In the face of the accusations, the management of CONGELCAM organised a presser in Yaounde Tuesday March 29 during which it debunked the reports.
According to CONGELCAM officials, reports of rotten fish have been fabricated by competitors to tarnish the company’s image. It should be noted that about 80% of fish retailed in Cameroon is imported by CONGELCAM.
