Some Cameroon musicians have raised concerns over what they say is the rare playing of local content on radio airwaves by radio animators. They say, these radio stations, promote foreign music over local content.
According to them, Cameroon radio stations tend to promote foreign songs over local songs. According to Ateh Francis, President of the Cameroon Music Rights Corporation, SONACAM: ” The 80/20 law was an ordinance, which was signed in the 70(s) to protect Cameroon music and to ensure that our music develops, every animator in Cameroon is supposed to play 80% of Cameroon music and 20% of foreign music.”
Some Cameroon animators however, work in accordance with this law. Duval Ebale, a radio animator said” I ask my mentors here to play local music”.
It is however reported that measures are being taken by the SONACAM to ensure the protection and promotion of Cameroon artists and local music.
