A 50-year-old man is said to have sustained injuries at nightfall Wednesday April 6 as fire broke out at the Maroua Central Market in Maroua, Diamare Division of the Far North region.
The fire destroyed several shops.
Most shop owners had retuned home about an hour earlier before the fire erupted.
They are said to have rushed home to break the Ramadan fast when calamity hit the market.
Guards on duty are said to have notified officers of the 401st Firefighting Bridgae of after noticing the fire. Police and Gendarmes also stormed the market to help put the fire under control.
“If not for the prompt intervention of the firefighters, several shops would have been reduced to ashes, many lost millions, some are still assessing the impact,” said a source.
The cause of the fire however, remains unknown.
