Irate butchers in Yaoundé have begun a nationwide strike over the rising cost of meat in the country’s capital.

Some of them whom we interviewed have told Mimi Mefo Infos that the meat market has been “taken hostage by foreigners in Yaoundé, under the watchful eyes of the authorities who have stayed mute”.

Meat prices have risen from 4000frs/ kilograms, to 6000frs/kgs, putting several butchers out of competition.

“…I tell you this with tears in my eyes if any butcher today tells you that he is not indebted, then he is a liar,” a butcher confided in MMI.

The angry butchers say they will continue to rally for a national strike against the exorbitant prices beginning today lMonday April 11, 2022.

They have vowed to continue the protest until their worries are addressed.

The butchers have equally urged authorities to intervene.

At the time of this report, the Senior Divisional Officer of Mfoundi was in talks with the butchers. The meeting’s outcome is still awaited.
