Traders of the Marché de la Gare have remained inconsolable, following yesterday’s demolition of over 300 shops in Douala, Littoral Region of Cameroon.

The demolitions were carried out by agents of the Douala II council, in the early hours of Thursday, July 7, 2022.

Prior to the demolitions, a series of meetings were reportedly held but with no concrete resolutions.

One of the traders disclosed that “on May 30th we received a communique asking us to leave latest the second June. With this situation, we went to meet the mayor to express our discontentment but she didn’t receive us.”

The trader continued, “It was rather the Divisional Officer who asked us to calm down and organize a meeting with the council administrators of the Douala II council, but at the end of the consultation, no concrete resolution was made.”

Meanwhile, the Douala II council on its part has argued that the demolitions are carried out for the construction of a new modern market to beautify the city of Douala and as well help traders to go about their businesses smoothly.

Traders have however called on the state to at least endeavor to provide a space where they can continue running their businesses, in the meantime.
