Shops that were sealed by government forces at the Mbon park in Mbengwi, Momo Division of the restive Anglophone Region of Cameroon were reopened, Tuesday August 30, 2022.
The shops were sealed by forces loyal to the government of Cameroon on Monday August 29, 2022, a day which has now been baptised traditional Monday Ghost Towns observed in the Anglophone regions of the country.
Reports say all attempts by the authorities led by the Divisional Officer D.O for Mbengwi Sub Division, Sakwe Jarvis Esapa to extort money from the shop owners yielded no fruits.
The shops were sealed after the elements of the Rapid Intervention Battalion (BIR) came to the park about a week ago warned that anyone respecting the Monday ghost town operations will suffer the consequences.
“They drove to the park and forced everyone to stop what they were doing and listen to them. Others positioned themselves at strategic positions for security, a clear indication that all is not well, yet they want to use us as human shield,” a native of Mbengwi whom we are not naming told MMI.
The forces of law and order, he added, “… are not always there on Mondays, yet they want us to go and die. It is a shame that soldiers are using the Anglophone crisis to add their ranks in the military.”
The Divisional Officer has also come under fire from the population for always using the BIR to extort money from them.
The people also say their elite have all abandoned them to themselves.
