Today Monday September 5, 2022 according Cameroon’s academic calendar, marks the beginning of another school year through out the national territory.

While children from the eight French-speaking regions of the country have effectively answered present in school, the situation in the English speaking Northwest and Southwest regions is different.

Despite massive mobilisation by government, the two regions continue observing a ghost town.

Most educational institutions have remained closed with streets void of students, marked by timid economic activities. In Buea and Mamfe in the South West Region and Nkambe in the North West, some parents however defied the odds and sent their kids to school, as reported by national television.

It is however unclear if the persistent situation is due to the fact that Monday is usually observed as ghost town day, imposed by separatists since 2017.

Separatists are known to have conditionally relaxed their stands on school boycott.

From past experience, schools will likely resume full swing on Tuesday September 6, when businesses return to normal.
