The villages of Koba Bakundu and Wone Bakundu in Konye, Meme Division of the South West Region of Cameroon may not have their traditional rulers crowned anytime soon, MMI has learnt.

The process to select the new traditional rulers is reportedly marred by influence peddling as the administration is accused of trying to force impostors on the two villages.

Reports say things came to a head when, Attah Moses Ndip, the Divisional Officer (D.O) of Konye ordered the detention of 10 Koba Bakundu King Makers.

“He detained 10 Koba kingmakers just to subdue them and impose a chief on them”, a local source knowledgeable with the case, told MMI.

“On October 27, 2022, he detained 10 Koba Kingmakers and collected 25.000FCFA each before releasing them,” the source further explained.

Koba Bakundu, according to him, has two major families with Bisamai being the lone royal family with five households but the D.O. is favouring a family that has nothing to do with the crown.

The village according to MMI findings has been ruled by five monarchs, all from the Bisamai family

The once-united village is now allegedly divided over the chieftaincy issue.

The civil administrator, reports say, is threatening to do the same to kingmakers of Wone Bakundu.

In a meeting with Kingmakers recently, he said they will be locked up for signing a document endorsing a candidate at variance with the D.Os choice.

The case of Wone Bakundu followed suit, Thursday, November 17, 2022, with a meeting ending in deadlock as the D.O. continued with threats.

Most villagers say the administrator is likely to have collected bribes from impostors to force them on the people.
