The French Government has said it “strongly condemns” the brutal murder of journalist Martinez Zogo, urging President Paul Biya’s government to honour its promise to investigate and prosecute the perpetrators.
In a statement released on Facebook Friday, January 27, France, Cameroon’s top international ally, became the latest of several international stakeholders who have criticised the journalist’s killing.
“France strongly condemns the murder of Cameroonian journalist Martinez Zogo. She calls from those responsible to be identified and held accountable for their actions, as the Cameroonian authorities have committed,” the statement read.
The French Government seems to exert much influence on Cameroon and its statement, it is believed, may influence the Cameroon Government to take concrete action against Martinez Zogo’s killers.
French President Emmanuel Macron shocked Cameroonians when he said at a meeting in Paris in 2020 that he was the one who had instructed President Biya to free detained opposition leader Maurice Kamto.
Macron’s statement confirmed held beliefs that France controls, from behind, events in Cameroon, its former colony.
