Apongnde Mystery, a lower sixth student of Baptist Comprehensive High School (BCHS) Nkwen – Bamenda in the North West region has emerged winner of the Commonwealth essay writing contest in Cameroon.
The contest was organized as part of activities marking the 2023 edition of Commonwealth Day.
Apongnde was announced as the winner in a ceremony to mark Commonwealth Day in Yaounde on March 13, 2023.
His essay, MMI gathered, centered on the responsible use of social media.
Other winners behind Apongnde were also announced.
They each carried home some prizes
Chaired by Foreign minister Le Jeune Mbella Mbella, the event was attended by some top government ministers including the deputy minister in charge of the Commonwealth, Felix Mbayu, and some dignitaries of Commonwealth nations based in Yaounde.
Speaking shortly after being crowned winner and awarded Apongnde Mystery said, “When I wrote the essay, what I had at the back of my mind was to use social media to forge the message of a peaceful and sustainable”
“If we use social media to spread the right information, we will be able to attain our vision and goal for the future,” he added
Expressing joy and happiness, Apongnde said, “This award carries much value for me not just as a student but as a person”
The prizes awarded to the winner, MMI gathered, included a cash prize of 200,000frs from the ministry of secondary education, 35,000frs from the NFC bank, 35,000frs from the ministry of external relations, a Samsung galaxy from the ministry of finance, a smartphone from the Telecommunications regulatory board and a certificate.
The 2023 edition of the world Commonwealth Day observed every second Monday in March was held this year under the theme, “Forging a sustainable and peaceful common future”
