Three Cameroonian soldiers and a civilian are reported to have been killed in Penda Mboko in the Litoral Region of the country, this morning, by persons alleged to be separatist fighters.
The victims were crossing to Nkongsamba to commemorate Labour Day when they were ambushed and shot dead by the Ambazonia separatist fighters.
A civilian said to have been a bike rider was also shot and killed alongside the military officers.
“The fighters presumed from Malende crossed the border with the aim to ambush some Cameroon Development Cooperation (CDC) workers that were about to go participate in labour day ceremony in Mbanga,” narrated a source to MMI.
He added that “While waiting for the CDC convoy, two bikes carrying Cameroon soldiers from Penda Mboko to Mbanga were targeted and attacked.”
International Labour Day is being celebrated across Cameroon, but in many parts of the English-speaking Regions, the atmosphere is quite different because the commentation falls on a Monday, the day separatists imposed as a traditional lockdown day since 2017.
However, MMI cannot confirm if the attack on soldiers at Penda Mboko was related to the Labour Day celebrations.
