The local population of Essos neighbourhood in Yaounde, the capital of Cameroon woke up this morning to find a 6-month-old baby abandoned by the mother.
The alarm was raised in the early hours of this morning when some early risers heard the cries of the baby and upon investigation, found her sitting in tears.
An inhabitant of the neighbourhood who was present at the scene says the child was found behind a “snack” and had been thrown away during the early hours of the morning when it was still dark.
The motive behind the abandonment of the baby is unclear but this is a growing phenomenon in Cameroon, which has witnessed an increase in the number of abandoned babies in recent months.
Law enforcement officers are reported to have arrived at the scene and taken the baby to the Chantal Biya’s Foundation while investigations have been opened to trace the mother.
