The Christmas celebration in Mbongo, a village in the Littoral region of Cameroon, experienced a sombre twist of fate on the night that resulted in the loss of two lives.

The distressing incident unfolded around 3 am in the locality, located just a few kilometers from the regional capital, Douala.

According to reports, the tragedy began when one of the youths was dancing with a young lady in the popular Vatican snack bar. A jealous 23-year-old youth, witnessing the interaction, attacked the dancer, sparking a violent altercation.

“The latter, who could not bear to watch the young woman give access to her body to another man, threw himself at the dancer, triggering a merciless fight,” explained a source familiar with the incident.

Disheartened by his defeat in the heated altercation, the 23-year-old retreated to his home, retrieved a knife, and returned to the scene, brutally stabbing the other youth to death.

Following the act, the assailant fled to the Mbongo Socapalm plantations, where he was later apprehended by the enraged local population and subsequently lynched.

In the aftermath of the incident, some residents questioned the true essence of the Christmas celebration and its intended meaning.

A Facebook user, Kmgauto Deal, expressed skepticism, stating: “During so-called Christian holidays, there are always accidents and dramas… I deeply believe that a religious celebration must take place in peaceful homes without the drinking establishments, temples, mainly dominated by devilish acts.”

Ben-Hanan Elong, another social media user, lamented the frequency of deaths over seemingly trivial matters, remarking, “Losing one’s life over such an insignificant matter has become so commonplace in this country that it is becoming worrying.”

Meanwhile, Lauré Djeunpi emphasized the importance of avoiding unnecessary conflicts, saying, “I always say, running away from a fight doesn’t mean you’re afraid. Sometimes it’s better to apologize even when you’re right. Now who loses?” Lauré pondered. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for peaceful celebrations and the tragic consequences that can arise from unchecked emotions during festive occasions.
