Cameroon has sadly exited the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) at round 16. The Indomitable Lions bowed to the Super Eagles of Nigeria 0-2 – in an encounter that has left many in shock.

“Our attack line is so poor. No chances at all,” Ngah Paulinus wrote in dismay. Asong Afor thinks “Cameroon underestimated Nigeria.”

In the match on Saturday evening at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan, Nigeria scored the first goal in the first half and the second winning goal in the second half, – which sealed the fate of the Lions squad in the competition.

Ademola Lookman was the hero of the day, scoring both goals and sending the Super Eagles into a showdown with Angola in the next round.

Rough start for Cameroon

The match kicked off with high intensity as Nigeria’s Semi Ajayi thought he had given his team an early lead, only to see his goal disallowed after a VAR review. Undeterred, the Super Eagles continued their relentless attacking play, with Victor Osimhen causing havoc in the Cameroon defence.

It was Osimhen’s persistent pressing and skill that paved the way for the opening goal in the 36th minute. Cameroon’s Oumar Gonzalez, Osimhen set up Ademola Lookman, who found the back of the net despite the efforts of goalkeeper Fabrice Ondoa. The first half concluded with Nigeria in the lead, setting the stage for an enthralling second half.

Nigeria’s coach, Jose Peseiro, emphasised the importance of a solid defensive performance, and his team delivered, thwarting the Indomitable Lions’ attempts to level the score. The Super Eagles showcased resilience, even with goalkeeper Stanley Nwabili being stretchered off due to injury late in the game.

Cameroon, missing key players like Andre Onana and Vincent Aboubakar, failed to mount a comeback. The introduction of Aboubakar in the second half did little to alter the course of the match, as Nigeria continued to dominate.

The final blow came in the 90th minute, with Calvin Bassey delivering a precise cross from the left and Lookman, born in London, calmly slotting home to seal the 2-0 victory. The 22,085 fans in attendance erupted in celebration as Nigeria booked their spot in the quarterfinals.

Nigeria’s path to the last eight has been impressive, with the Super Eagles topping their group undefeated. As they pursue their fourth continental title, the group, under the fearsome Osimhen’s leadership, now poses a serious threat to the current champion Senegal.

Looking ahead, Nigeria is set to face Angola in the quarterfinals next Friday, a matchup that promises more excitement for fans of African football. The Super Eagles will draw inspiration from their historical encounters with Cameroon, maintaining their status as favourites in the quest for AFCON glory.

This victory not only solidifies Nigeria’s position as a formidable force in African football but also sets the stage for an intriguing journey towards potential continental glory. The Super Eagles’ blend of skill, determination, and team spirit will undoubtedly make them a team to watch as the Africa Cup of Nations unfolds.

Both Nigeria and Cameroon have a rich history of clashes, having met 24 times in all competitions and seven times in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The rivalry has seen both nations showcase their football prowess, with an even distribution of victories, as each side boasts three wins, accompanied by a single draw in AFCON encounters. The balanced head-to-head record only adds to the anticipation whenever these two football powerhouses face off on the pitch.
