Barrister Akere Muna has been honored as the “Man of the Year 2023” by the esteemed Guardian Post, acknowledging his unwavering commitment to combating corruption and injustice. The award ceremony, held last weekend, celebrated Muna’s tireless efforts in the face of the Glencore corruption scandal.
Expressing his gratitude, Muna shared, “I was absolutely compelled to dive into this colossal Glencore corruption scandal! But seriously, how can this scandalously corrupt company continue to operate in Cameroon without facing any consequences? It’s beyond comprehension.”
Muna, now a politician, emphasized the significance of the recognition from the Guardian Post, stating, “Being recognized as Man of the Year by the prestigious Guardian Post and its readers is an incredible honor. I am truly humbled.”
The award serves as a motivator for Muna to persist in his fight against corruption not only in Cameroon but also across Africa and the world. “Rest assured that I will not relent in my efforts until we uncover the identity of these anonymous high-level fraudsters at SONARA and SNH that Glencore has shamefully admitted to bribing. It is time to hold them accountable for their actions!” Muna declared.
A prominent figure in Cameroon and Africa, Muna, born on August 18, 1952, is the son of the late Solomon Tandeng Muna, the first Prime Minister of West Cameroon. Trained as a lawyer, he has dedicated many years to human rights advocacy and served as the founder and former president of Transparency International Cameroon.
Having run for president in 2018, Muna remains a vocal critic of the incumbent Paul Biya’s regime, advocating for reforms to combat corruption and enhance governance. His multifaceted contributions include roles such as Chairman of the International Anti-Corruption Conference Council and Sanctions Commissioner of the African Development Bank Group.
The Guardian Post, a leading independent newspaper in Cameroon known for critical reporting on the government, bestowed the “Man of the Year” award on Muna, reflecting the growing importance of independent press in the country. This award captures the essence of Muna’s recognition, underscoring the significance of his work in the fight against corruption and injustice.
