Two accidents occurred this Tuesday morning on the eastbound artery in Douala, at the “Three Million Bridge” near the Ndogpassi market.
The first accident involved a motorcycle taxi and a truck. The motorcycle rider, who was making a risky overtaking maneuver, came face-to-face with the truck traveling towards Yaoundé. The truck driver had to swerve onto the median to avoid a head-on collision, ending up in the oncoming lane. Fortunately, the three occupants of the motorcycle escaped with minor injuries, although the motorcycle was badly damaged.
A few meters further on, another truck traveling in the opposite direction narrowly missed a Mercedes-Benz car. Both accidents caused significant traffic congestion, which was quickly cleared by police intervention.
These accidents, which could have been much worse, highlight once again the dangers of driving on Douala’s eastbound artery. This busy road is frequently the scene of serious accidents. The Cameroonian authorities are calling on drivers to exercise caution and respect the traffic code, but most of the accidents are caused by the bad nature of the roads and the lack of good dual carriageways.
