The Cameroon national volleyball team finds itself entangled in a financial dispute that threatens its participation in future competitions.
Ivan Kody, a member of the team, has raised concerns about the unpaid participation bonuses from the African Nations Cup 2023, which have been pending for over nine months.
The delay in addressing the players’ grievances has had serious repercussions, leading many to boycott the upcoming 2024 African Games.
This decision reflects the frustration and discontent among the athletes who feel neglected and undervalued.
Christian Tchapmi, the director of communications at Fecavolley, responded to the allegations when the editorial team of Mimi Mefo Info contacted him.
He emphasized that there has been no repression against the players for demanding their rightful bonuses.
He acknowledged that the players received partial payments upon their return from the competition, where they achieved a commendable fourth place overall.
However, Tchapmi clarified that the responsibility for the payment of bonuses lies with the Ministry of Sports (MIMSEP).
Due to cash flow issues raised by the government, Fecavolley pre-financed several competitions, including the U19 World Championships and the African Senior Women’s Nations Championships.
Despite their efforts, the federation has been met with bureaucratic delays in obtaining the remaining funds from the Ministry of Sports.
Tchapmi assured that Fecavolley has taken official steps and provided all necessary documentation to expedite the resolution of the issue.
“This is not blackmail,” Tchapmi emphasized, seeking to allay fears among the players.
“Arrangements have been made to ensure that the remaining bonuses are paid to the players.”
The financial tension within MINSEP (Ministry of Sports and Physical Education) is a cause for concern, as it not only affects the morale and well-being of the athletes but also jeopardizes the country’s representation in international competitions.
Without timely resolution, the future of Cameroon’s volleyball team hangs in the balance, casting a shadow over their aspirations for success on the global stage.
