A journalism student has encouraged around 60 inmates at the Buea Central Prison to embrace self-empowerment opportunities to facilitate their social reintegration into society.
Nkoko Maiva, a journalism student from the University of Buea, explained her motivation for the visit: “I thought of coming to the prison because it is less visited by people on a normal day, unless it’s your family member or someone who knows you. The thought of encouraging women in a different way by giving them sanitary pads and water for encouragement and teaching them how to make beads to earn money for themselves. Because they will not end up depending on everybody and family members out there.”
Her visit coincided with Women’s Day, which is why she targeted the female inmates. According to the bureau chief in charge of socio-cultural and youth activities, such initiatives significantly support their social reinsertion program in prison. “Social reinsertion is one of our main missions. We appreciate this team from UB and JMC in particular for their time and initiative to come here.”
As part of the community project for Miss Noble Woman 2024/2025, in which Koko Maiva is a contestant, approximately 60 inmates received both food and non-food items.
