As part of the 52nd National Day celebrations on May 20, 2024, and to build on the government’s efforts to support youth empowerment and nation-building, the Regional Delegation of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Civic Education for the South West, under the coordination and supervision of the Governor, officially launched civilian events in Buea.

The regional launch took place at the Regional Multipurpose Youth Empowerment Centre in Buea on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, starting at 10:00 a.m. Various non-governmental organizations were in attendance, including CWASAF OGA, Bless Foundation, Ninitemban Foundation, YAPCEP/Peace Academy, Fotaps Foundation, CYID, Lesly Foundation, and the Commonwealth Student Union.

The purpose of this launch was to empower these organisations in areas such as reproductive health and civic responsibility, enabling them to contribute positively to society. The director of the Regional Multipurpose Youth Empowerment Centre for South West Buea, representing the regional delegate of youth and civic education, Mr. Isaac Mbua, told MMI, “Today I was representing the regional delegate of youth and civic education, Mr. Isaac Mbua. We are celebrating this day with a number of activities. Today we had a workshop that served as the official launch of our civilian activities. The National Day is a day that we do the promotion of our unity force who [are] doing everything so that Cameroonians live in peace and unity.”

The workshop focused on civic education and entrepreneurial skills. Following this, there will be a programme at the ministry on Civic Education, which will incorporate the Korean approach to mind education. One of the participants, Abang Kerine, shared her experience:

“I am here today representing the Lesly Foundation. The workshop was actually an interesting one. It was very interesting because I personally learnt a lot. We know, as ladies, we were told it’s good not to neglect our health; health is wealth. We have to test ourselves from time to time to know our health conditions, and also, we were advised to consider family planning with the constant help of our husbands. Some ladies consume this stuff and afterward find difficulties, then start accusing the hospital. They said it’s good to include your husband. I’ve learned a lot apart from that; the workshop was really helpful and educational.”

The day’s activities concluded with a football match among the youth. This launch aims to empower youth and organisations to give back to society, as they cannot pour from an empty cup, a point emphasised by the delegate of the youth and multipurpose centre.
