Separatist fighters shot dead a Cameronian army officer in Mundemba, headquarters of Ndian Division of the South West, as the country celebrated National Day on May 20.

The officer was killed during an attack on the military, which is reported to have resulted in a number of injuries. MMI could not confirm the exact number of casualties on both sides.

The attack was reportedly orchestrated by the Ambazonia Defence Forces (ADF), one of the separatist groups operating in the English-speaking Regions of Cameroon.

The Ambazonia Governing Council, AGovC, which controls the ADF, confirmed the attack on Tuesday morning.

Despite the attack, the 52nd National Day was commemorated in Mundemba and other areas of Ndian, including Bakassi, amid a separatist lockdown that adversely affected celebrations in most parts of the English-speaking Regions.

The attack in Mundemba comes one week after separatists killed five Gendarme officers in Manyu, South West, and two military officers in Bambui, North West.

On a more somber note, separatists also attacked and killed the Mayor of Belo in the North West, Ngong Innocent, alongside his deputy and a basic education inspector during Monday’s National Day celebrations.

Hundreds of repentant separatist fighters in the Anglophone Regions participated in the National Day march pasts in Buea and Bamenda, headquarters of the South West and North West Regions respectively.

The recent separatist attacks come amid an intense crackdown on separatists groups in the North West and South West Regions over the past months by the Cameroon military.
