Rectors appointed by President Biya
President Paul Biya recently issued two decrees announcing the appointment of rectors for three prominent universities in Cameroon. The appointments, made on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, signal a new era of leadership in academia for these institutions.
The newly appointed rectors are as follows:
Professor Omgba Richard Laurent is a well-known figure in the academic circles of Cameroon. Prior to his appointment as rector of the University of Yaoundé II, he held esteemed positions such as Director of Higher Education Development in the Ministry of Higher Education and Permanent Secretary of the Consultative Commission of University Institutions, overseeing grade changes. Furthermore, his tenure as the dean of the Faculty of Arts, Letters, and Human Sciences at the University of Yaoundé I showcased his passion for literature, reflected in his authored works like “Aimée Saisaire” and “Le Monde Noire,” which underscore his expertise in Anti-Colonial and Caribbean Literature.
Another distinguished academic figure is Professor Pegbyemb Dieudonne Emmanuel, appointed as the rector of the University of Bertoua. With a wealth of experience, Professor Pegbyemb previously served as the Director of University Accreditation and Quality and General Coordinator of the Support Programme for Technological and Professional Components. Hailing from the Sanaga Maritime Division of the Littoral region, he has dedicated over 35 years to the university sector, specialising in organic chemistry.
Professor Etoua Remy Magloire Dieudonne, the newly appointed rector of the University of Yaoundé I, brings a blend of administrative prowess and academic acumen to his role. Previously serving as the pioneer rector of the University of Bertoua since June 5, 2022, he also held the position of Director of the Advanced School of Engineering, commonly known as Polytechnic. Returning to a campus where he once pursued his studies, Professor Etoua’s background in mathematics enriches his leadership in academia.
These presidential appointments mark the transition from the tenures of Professor Aurelien and Professor Adolfe, who have respectively served as rectors of the University of Yaoundé I and II for nearly 14 and 7 years. Professor Aurelien’s retirement and Professor Adolfe’s new role as a member of the Constitutional Council usher in a new chapter for these esteemed universities under fresh leadership.
