Abducted Businesswoman Dies During Rescue Operation

A businesswoman in Bamenda identified as Sama Hilda has died in captivity after she was abducted by attackers suspected to be Ambazonia fighters.

She was reportedly shot during crossfire between the abductors and security forces during a rescue mission to free her and other captives.

She was rushed to the Bamenda Regional Hospital, where she died on Thursday, September 26.

Sources told MMI that Hilda was kidnapped seven days ago around Mile 6 Nkwen, Bamenda.

Alerted about the incident, security forces on Wednesday, September 25, embarked on a rescue operation storming the hideout of the kidnappers.

A shootout ensued, leading to a stray bullet hitting Hilda in the chest and another abductor in the leg.

Hilda was evacuated for medical attention, where she unfortunately died due to severe wounds.

Abductions have become rampant in the English-speaking Regions of Cameroon, where a separatist conflict has been raging since 2016.

More than 6,000 people have died during the conflict, according to the United Nations.

Ambazonia separatists have also been indicted in several kidnapping and abduction bids. This has created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty within the population.
