About 257,000 People Experiencing Starvation In Cameroon – MINADER

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development (MINADER) recently revealed that over 25,7000 people are currently experiencing starvation in Cameroon.

Due to gross inflation in the economy, famine is gradually gaining ground.

Analysis and diagnosis of the food and nutrition situation, by the Cameroon government, revealed that about 1% of the country’s population is experiencing a famine crisis. Most of these consist of residents of the Far North region.

Minister Gabriel Mbairobe during an interview with CRTV radio indicated that “the 2021 season was marked by droughts in some Divisions, particularly in Logone-et-Chari, Mayo-Danay, and Mayo-Kani.”

He added that “there have been attacks by arm worms that have devastated crops and attacks by granivorous birds and migratory locusts. In Mayo-Kani, there have also been pachyderm attacks.”

All of these according to him contributed to a decrease in household food stocks.

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) however recently donated 500000 Dollars, equivalent to more than 320 million FCFA to assist these vulnerable populations.

Meanwhile, the government of Cameroon is said to have provided food aid to the most vulnerable population, mainly in the Logone-Birni.

MMI has been unable to confirm if these food aid have reached the intended population.
