On the Mbé Cliff along one of Cameroon’s most feared highways, a disaster was narrowly avoided when a tanker truck carrying several thousand litres of diesel caught fire while manoeuvring the dangerous highway.

The menacing flames plunged the area into fear. A fire of rare intensity could have turned tragic without the rapid intervention of firefighters. The name Mbé resonates like an ordeal for all drivers using National Road No. 1, which connects the North to Adamawa.

This road perches on a steep cliff, notorious for its dangerous bends and steep slopes, where many heavy-duty vehicles have plunged into the void.

A tanker truck loaded with diesel navigated the perilous road that day.

The driver executed a delicate manoeuvre, and a dull thud echoed. Thick black smoke rose into the sky within seconds.

Flames engulfed the vehicle. The 302nd Fire Company quickly responded to the scene.

Upon their arrival, the truck was already engulfed in flames, threatening to explode at any moment. The situation was critical: a detonation of the tanker could cause a disaster on this busy road.

Firefighters to the Rescue

Firefighters began a fierce battle against the blaze. It took them several hours to control the flames and prevent an explosion that could have caused considerable human and material damage.

“We mobilised all our resources to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to other vehicles,” explained a firefighter officer.

Miraculously, no human lives were reported. The driver, who was able to escape in time, is in shock but unharmed.

The team brought the flames under control, but the exact cause of the fire remains unclear. Did the engine overheat? Is there a fuel leak? Is there a technical malfunction? Authorities may open an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the incident.

This incident highlights a worrying reality: transporting flammable products on such dangerous roads represents a major risk.

The Mbé cliff is a traffic black spot in Adamawa. Between the steep slopes, the narrow roadway, and the dilapidated condition of the trucks, accidents are frequent.

Truck drivers and oil haulers must exercise greater caution, and authorities must strengthen safety measures. That day, fate spared lives. But the Mbé fire is a wake-up call.

How long will luck continue to favor the users of this hellish road?
