Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso – Burkina Faso’s military leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, delivered a New Year’s address calling for unity among the nation’s people and a continued fight against neocolonialism and foreign influence. He characterised 2023 as a year of “breaking through the shackles” of those forces and asserted that Africa must forge its own path to success.

Traoré described 2023 as a year of introspection and decisive action, stating, “It was a year of evaluation that led us to take important decisions and to break through the shackles of slavery, imperialism, and neocolonialism.” He further emphasised the continent’s need for self-reliance, stating, “Africa must continue to stand on its own because you cannot hope to find your lost object by calling for help from the one who stole it from you.”

Unity Amidst Challenges

While emphasising the importance of fighting external influences, Traoré also called for internal unity, urging citizens to “cultivate love among themselves.”

He expressed hopes for a year of “combativeness,” “happiness,” and fulfilment of aspirations, but acknowledged the lingering threat of internal and external enemies.

“The enemy has not yet put away his hatchet; whether from within or from without, imperialism is always active,” he warned.

Traoré also expressed gratitude to citizens who actively participate in “citizen vigil” to protect the ongoing transition government. He commended their understanding of the ongoing struggle and their commitment to security.

Mixed Reactions

Traoré’s message is likely to receive mixed reactions. His stance against perceived neocolonialism resonates with a portion of the population eager for greater independence, but his rhetoric is likely to raise concerns among some of Burkina Faso’s international partners.

Additionally, the call for internal unity comes amidst a complex political landscape and ongoing security challenges.

Traoré’s New Year’s address signals a continued focus on self-reliance and resistance to external influence.

The coming year will provide further insights into how Traoré intends to steer the country and whether his vision for a self-determined Burkina Faso can be realised.
