African Jesuits calls for investigation into Kumba school shooting

The Jesuit Conference of Africa and Madagascar is the latest to denounce a school shooting in Kumba over the weekend.

In a press release, it condemns “… in the strongest possible terms last Saturday’s killing and wounding of innocent children at Mother Francisca Nursery and Primary School in Kumba, Southwest Region, by armed individuals who opened fire on innocent children.”

“We are shocked and outraged by the killing of innocent school children. We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the children and offer our prayers and moral support to the wounded and their families and to the entire community of Kumba,” the release adds.

Describing the act as heinous and despicable, the African Jesuits “… demand that this violence stops now and that children should be allowed to live in safety without any fear of violence.”

“… We further demand that the perpetrators of the attack be brought to justice,” they add.

The call by the Jesuits is not the first appeal of its kind made to stakeholders in the war that has lasted four years today.

Government has promised paying medical bills of the victims, as well as assured security for students in the Anglophone regions. It has however made no concrete statement regarding an investigation, as it trades blames with separatist fighters.
