Agbor Balla pushes for Anglophone President, rotational presidency

Human Rights lawyer, Barrister Nkongho Felix Agbor has said the solution to Cameroons political woes ‘may lie in a more representative Presidential system.’

The award-winning lawyer and head of the Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Africa made the remark in a recent interview he granted the press.

To him, it is essential to touch the minds and hearts of Anglophones and “let them feel that they are part of this country.”

“It is important to have an Anglophone President and equally to have a rotational presidency,”

Barrister Balla suggested.

This to him, will guarantee minority rights. He said: “if we only go by the way of the majority we (Anglophones) will never be able to have a president. So it is very important that this campaign should be carried out by everybody.”

Barrister Nkongho it should be recalled, is one of thousands of Anglophones arrested and detained in Connection to the sociopolitical crisis in the North West and South West Region of the country.

After he regained freedom many months later, thousands more remain behind bars as government forces battle with Separatists clamouring for the independence English-speaking Regions independent. But Balla thinks having an Anglophone as president is the solution.

He and many others maintain that the crisis can’t be solved using arms, but through genuine dialogue and compromise on the side of both parties.
