Schools in Bamenda, the capital of the restive North-West Region of Cameroon have sent children back home due to the tense atmosphere this Friday, February 10, 2022.
The students told this reporter that they were told that their lives were very important and that no amount of security forces can assure their safety.
“My teacher said we should go home and that if anything bad happened to us, the authorities will do nothing as has always been the case.”
In some of the schools, soldiers are on guard, yet school authorities have refused to take any chances.
Activities started timidly but because of the frightening nature of the town, many of the few bikes and the yellow taxis that have been circulating have disappeared from the streets.
In Bambui, many were afraid to leave their homes after heavy gunshots last night.
They said the gunshots came from government forces and this rather scared the population.
At press time, we hear activities were still very timid.
