Akere Muna walks Junior Ngombe out of SED as government bows to pressure

Social media activist, Junior Ngombe, has been freed from the State Secretariat of Defence for the Gendarmerie, SED, following days of advocacy and calls for his release.

Renowned lawyer, Barrister Akere Muna, walked the 23-year-old out of jail this Thursday afternoon after taking up his defence days earlier.

Junior Ngombe, a barber based in Douala, was arrested at his job site last Thursday and shoved into SED. He was reportedly charged with “incitement to rebellion” and “propagation of false information.”.

He is known for his viral TikTok campaign against bad governance in Cameroon and for advocating for youths to register massively for next year’s Presidential elections.

His arrest triggered massive reactions from political leaders, human rights and civil society advocates.

“As a social media activist, he has been advocating for voter registration and participation. Concerned about his uncertain future, he rightfully expresses his worries and frustrations, as allowed by the constitution,” said Barrister Akere Muna after Ngombe’s arrest.

Junior Ngombe is one of many activists who have suffered arbitrary arrests in Cameroon in the recent past for simply expressing themselves on political issues, a right guaranteed by the country’s Constitution.
