Legendary Nigerian Singer Onyeka Onwenu Passes Away at 72

Veteran Nigerian singer, songwriter, and actress Onyeka Onwenu has died at the age of 72. Reports indicate that the iconic artist passed away on Tuesday night after performing at an event in Banana Island, Lagos. According to sources, Onwenu slumped following her performance at the birthday celebration of Stella Okoli, the owner of Emzor Pharmaceuticals. She was later confirmed dead at a hospital in Victoria Island, as reported by The Guardian Newspaper. As of now, her family has yet to officially confirm her passing.

Born in 1952 in Obosi, Anambra State, Nigeria, Onyeka Onwenu began her illustrious music career in the 1980s. She made a notable entrance into the music scene with her debut album, “For the Love of You,” released in 1981. Throughout her career, she has released numerous albums and singles, with her hit song “One Love” standing out as a significant contribution to the Nigerian music landscape.

In addition to her music career, Onwenu made substantial contributions to Nollywood, appearing in several films and earning numerous awards for her work in both music and film. Recognized as a pioneer of Nigerian music, she has been a prominent figure in the country’s entertainment industry.

Onwenu’s influence extended beyond entertainment into the political realm. In 2013, she was appointed Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture, and in 2016, she became the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development.

Her contributions to Nigerian society were formally recognized with the National Honors of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011. Onwenu was also celebrated as one of Nigeria’s most influential women by various organizations.

The passing of Onyeka Onwenu marks the end of an era for Nigerian entertainment, leaving behind a legacy of groundbreaking music and dedicated public service.
