Prominent civil society actor and lawyer Barrister Alice Nkom, alongside political activist Edith Kah Walla, marked their milestone birthdays, 80 and 60 years, respectively, on February 28, 2025, by honoring human rights advocates in Cameroon.

The event, held in Douala, recognized at least eight individuals for their courage and commitment to justice in a country facing persistent human rights challenges.

During the ceremony, Barrister Alice Nkom underscored the relentless efforts of human rights defenders, emphasizing the personal risks involved in their work.

“We put our lives on the line every day to ensure justice for those who need it most. While our work provides hope for the disenfranchised, it is often perceived as a threat by those in power, placing us in constant danger. Our existence is a daily struggle,” she stated.

Similarly, Kah Walla hoped the recognition would inspire award recipients to further advance human rights.

She explained that the decision to transform their birthday celebrations into a recognition event stemmed from a deep-seated desire to drive societal change through meaningful action.

“I proudly celebrate 60 years today, while Mai‌tre Alice Nkom is blessed to reach 80. We are grateful for another year of life. However, rather than focusing solely on ourselves, we celebrated those who have made significant strides in human rights advocacy. Even as you work quietly in your respective corners, know your efforts are seen, appreciated, and valued worldwide. Keep pushing forward,” she affirmed.

Human Rights Defenders Honored

One of the awardees, Barrister Edward Lyonga Ewule of Legend Law Firm in Buea, described the recognition as a powerful motivator that reinforces his dedication to the pursuit of justice.

“I am deeply honored and humbled to be recognized by two esteemed figures, Senior Barrister Alice Nkom and Madam Edith Kah Walla, as a trailblazer in human rights advocacy in Cameroon. Beyond their birthday celebrations, they seized the opportunity to acknowledge my humble efforts and those of three other individuals dedicated to justice and human rights. This recognition fuels my resolve to continue advocating for those in need,” he remarked.

The event concluded with attendees taking to the streets of Bali, Douala, in a symbolic act of activism, advocating for political reforms in Cameroon.

The occasion not only celebrated the lives of two influential figures but also reinforced the country’s ongoing fight for justice and human dignity.
