The self-proclaimed Ambazonia separatist leader known as “General” Colabo met his demise at the hands of his own associates due to a financial dispute, in Bamali, Ndop, Ngoketunjia Division. According to sources in Bamali village, it has been confirmed that the leader, known as Tantoh Leonard, was tragically killed by his colleagues on August 20, 2024.

The incident took place during the distribution of ransom money collected from parents of kidnapped victims earlier in August. Although the precise details are still uncertain, it is claimed that Leonard tried to deceive his associates by absconding with a substantial amount of the funds.

According to an insider who spoke to Mimi Mefo Info (MMI), Leonard’s plan was foiled, resulting in his capture and subsequent execution by his colleagues. The farmer later discovered his decomposing body, bringing a sombre conclusion to the story of betrayal and greed within the separatist group.

The Ambazonia separatist movement, aiming for independence for the Anglophone regions of Cameroon, has unfortunately been plagued by a multitude of human rights violations. Since the conflict started in late 2016, both government forces and separatist fighters have faced allegations of committing serious violations. Nevertheless, the separatists’ actions have raised significant alarm because of the harm they have caused to civilians.

There has been a significant increase in cases of kidnapping for ransom, with armed separatists specifically targeting civilians, students, and humanitarian workers. The victims of these kidnappings often experience severe physical and psychological trauma. During a significant event, 33 Roman Catholic seminary students were abducted in the Southwest region in April 20222.

Aside from kidnappings, separatist fighters have also been involved in unlawful killings, torture, and attacks on educational institutions. Since 2017, the education of thousands of children has been disrupted due to the occupation or destruction of schools and the enforcement of a boycott on education. The actions taken have resulted in a climate of fear and instability in the regions affected.

The ongoing conflict and the associated human rights abuses highlight the pressing need for a peaceful resolution and holding accountable those responsible for these violations. The international community emphasises the need for action to safeguard civilians and deliver justice to the victims of these heinous acts. However, many Cameroonians feel there is need for more concrete action beyond the calls.
