The recently resigned Indomitable Lion’s goalkeeper, André Onana has taken European football by storm and is looking at becoming the first-ever Cameroonian goalkeeper to win the UEFA Champions League.
His route to the final of the competition has been no fluke either, as he has been the major driving force behind Inter Milan’s journey to the final so far.
André Onana has helped the team by keeping a massive 8 clean sheets so far, as he also sets his sight on a 9th in the final to break the record for the cleanest sheets by a goalkeeper at the Champions League.
The former Cameroon international also has the most saves by any goalkeeper in this year’s champions league, and is currently ranked amongst the top 4 best players of the tournament this year, alongside names like Karim Benzema, Vinicius Junior, and Kevin De Bruyn.
After successfully beating AC Milan 3-0 on an aggregate scoreline, Andre Onana will become the first Cameroonian goalkeeper to play in a champions league final and will hope to be the first to win it.
For that to be achieved however, he will have to contain either Real Madrid, who are undoubted kings of the UEFA Champions League (14), or Manchester City, this year’s tournament favourites.
Both teams face off today at 8 pm Cameroon time, in a clash many see as the final before the final. They are both locked in a 1-1 scoreline, with a winner takes all encounter tonight.
Inter Milan won the Champions League for the last time in 2010. They defeated Bayern Munich 2-0 to complete the treble, a feat never before accomplished by an Italian or German team. That year, Cameroonian legend Samuel Eto’o was part of the Inter Milan Team and instrumental to their accomplishments.
Eto’o is currently the president of the Cameroon Football Federation and in a recent outing, congratulated Onana, calling him ‘his son’.
