Anglophone Armed Conflict: Brewery Company Driver Kidnapped In Bamenda

One of the drivers working for the Guinness brewery company in Bamenda has been abducted by armed men believed to be separatist fighters.

The man was kidnapped over the weekend in Nkwen, Bamenda III Sub Division, North West Region of Cameroon.

In a video that has gone viral and which has also been sent to family and friends of the victim, the man who appeared to have been tortured narrates how it all happened.

One of the speakers in the video could be heard saying that the reason why he was abducted is that his boss is one of the reasons for the security checkpoint in front of the Guinness depot in Mile 3 Nkwen.

“they asked for the checkpoint to be mounted there so as to protect the depot, not so,” asked the speaker.

“We want all the roadblocks to be dismantled so that our people can move freely without being harassed by government forces,” adds the voice.

Reacting to the video, many have asked why it should be a civilian to order for a police checkpoint to be dismantled when they are people with guns who can do that.

“separatist fighters have guns, they have been able to shut down some security checkpoints in some places, why can’t they do the same to the one at mile 3? Kidnapping a defenseless father whose only crime is trying to feed his family is not how the goals of this revolution will be achieved. My prayer is that he should be released” unharmed, George, a Bamenda citizen reacted.

It should be noted that while many say the roadblocks have helped curb the activities of armed groups operating in the town, a lot of human rights abuses against the population take place there including sexual harassment, extortion, hate speech, and brutality amongst others.

The authorities are yet to react to the video and no demands for ransom have been made.
