Anglophone Conflict:
Jailed Doctors Without Borders staff released, others still behind bars

A nurse and driver, both workers of international organization, Doctors Without Borders (DWB) have regained their freedom.

They were among four others of the same organization, arrested and detained in the South West Region for alleged links with separatist fighters.

Talking to MMI, an inside source said Ashu Godlove, an ambulance driver and Marguerite Getzande were released today, May 19.

Those released, the source revealed, are DWB staff who worked in Mamfe while the outfit still delivered care. The other two staff still detained, work in Kumba, another town in the South West region.

“Of the two released, was a pregnant lady,” said our source who added that: “They were arrested in the line of duty by security forces and tagged supporters of separatists.”

Their arrest was considered one of many attacks on DWB which eventually led to it shutting down operations in the troubled North West and more recently, South West region.

The international body cited among others, government’s persistent involvement in its activities, a violation of its neutrality.

Government’s persistent attacks

DWB has been victim of multiple verbal assaults by government over their period of operation in Anglophone Cameroon.

Despite many accusations by government of siding with separatists, it has failed to establish any said links.

The straw on the camel’s back was when the detention of four of its workers.

Doctors Without Borders in April, 2022 announced the suspension of its humanitarian activities in the South West following their arrest.

The body added that it was ready to resume, if government laid down more suitable conditions for its functioning.
