On the occasion of the African Human Rights day (October 21, 2022), the Cameroon Anglophone Crisis Database of Atrocities has cited five fresh atrocities committed in the conflict regions.

The Database is a volunteer initiative hosted at University of Toronto, which collects and verifies information on atrocities being perpetrated in Cameroon’s Anglophone conflict. It aims to counter impunity; deter further violence; and store information for future international justice processes and a possible national truth, justice, and reconciliation commission.

The incidents, it stated, include attacks at a market, health centre, ecovillage, drinking soir and remote settlements in 2021 and 2022.

“Incidents were perpetrated by the Cameroon military, non-state armed separatist fighters, or Fulani herdsmen,” it revealed.

The incidents detailed, include the burning of Ndanifor Ecovillage, Bafut where “corroborating evidence implicate the Cameroonian military in the burning.”

The second is an attack on Pia Market in Fondonera on July 1, 2022. “Armed separatist fighters appear to have perpetrated this attack, likely the Red Dragons of Lebialem. This is one of several attacks committed by separatist fighters outside the Anglophone regions, reflecting the potential for violence to spread,” the database warned.

The third, consisted burnings in Nwa Subdivision in February and March 2021. “CHRDA reporting states that armed Fulani from Nigeria, Adamawa, and Nwa Central Town were responsible. Over 100 homes and structures were reported to have been burned—the scale of destruction is significant.”

The burning at the Life Abundant Program (LAP) Healthcare Centre, Kumbo also made the list. It was razed on March 1, 2021.

The database noted that “multiple sources indicate that Cameroon military forces fired on the building, which went up in flames.”

The fifth atrocity, was the shooting of Five Civilians in Mile 90, Nsongwa. Admitting the existence of numerous contradictory accounts of the perpetrators and narrative of this incident, the database noted that the case “demonstrates the challenge of ascertaining the perpetrator for many incidents in the conflict.

The verified atrocities, the database remarked, “demonstrate an ongoing disregard for life and property in the Anglophone Crisis. They expose the warring parties for perpetrating human rights abuses which violate national and international laws.”
