The regional director of the World Food Programme for West and Central Africa, Chris Nikwa has revealed that the North West region is suffering from food insecurity on account of rising internal displacement and difficult access to farms due to the prevailing unrest in the North-West region.

The United Nations official, who has been received by North west governor Adolphe Lele Afrique, also reassured that the World Food Programme is assisting thousands of people who are hardest hit by the crisis in the North West region.

Statistics from the World Food Programme, WFP, indicate that over 950,000 people, mostly in the conflict-affected North West and South West regions, are suffering from severe food insecurity.

The World Food Programme director in charge of food distribution in the North West says that the key beneficiaries are mostly internally displaced and persons with disabilities.

“We have approximately 250.000 people that WFP is assisting in all 7 divisions in the North West, and particularly in Mezam, WFP is assisting 45.000 beneficiaries as of now”, she said.

The WFP with a 5000-ton warehouse in Bamenda has also offered financial assistance to an estimated 75.000 people in the region in 2020 and 2021.
